Shirley & Ram on the Israel National Trail

Beyond the immense sense of history and breaking news, the Israel National Trail powerfully connects to something that often gets lost in all the headlines—the sublime beauty of the wilderness of the Middle East..." National Geographic World's Best Hikes: Epic Trails. A hiking trail (1,100 km long, divided into 56 sections) that crosses Israel between the southern and northern borders, traversing a wide range of landscapes, a rich variety of flora and fauna, and a diversity of cultures. When weather permitted we hike the trail from the Lebanese border in the north towards the south.

Shirley & Ram on the Israel National Trail

Section 1: from Tel Dan to Kfar Giladi (about 15 km)

It was a long time since we hiked, just the two of us, away from everything and away from home 😊 So we were very enthusiastic to start this experience together. We packed our hiking bags with lots of water, dry fruit and nuts, and of course our herbal tea and homemade cookies. We slept the night before in the north and early morning start walking from the Biblical Tel Dan below snowy Mount Hermon, along the Lebanese border and the Snir river. Then we walked along with the avocado and pears orchards of Kibbutz Maayan Baruch and a few km later concluded our first day at the Roaring Lion Monument in Kibbutz Kfar Giladi dedicated to Yosef Trumpeldor and his 7 friends who died in 1920 protecting their land.

Section 2: from Kfar Giladi to Nebi Yosha (about 22 km)

From Kfar Giladi we start climbing to Ramot Naftali mountain range (about 650 meters) and walk most of the day along the mountain trail high above the beautiful Hula Valley. All-day long we had great views over the valley, the Golan Heights, and Mount Hermon. Very long day, not easy at all, especially when the temperature start raising so we were quite happy when we reached the precipice and narrow canyon of Kadesh river. Using the build-in metal ladder we descend the beautiful canyon and an hour later climb for the last time to our destination.

Section 3: from Nebi Yosha to Dishon (about 16 km)

We had a severe hit wave in Israel, during the month of May and needed to wait for the opportunity to continue hiking before the summer start. Once it was over, we drove back to the north to continue the trail. We start hiking early and to our surprise, a winter storm hit us as we were walking along the mountain pass with nowhere to escape. We hike the first 2 hours in the pouring rain, cold and covered in mud but our hot tea and big smiles save us until the sun shined on us and the beautiful landscape evolved us. Great experience and a great day!
