Hidden gems in Jerusalem

We are all pilgrims to Jerusalem: Jews Christians and Muslims, who visit the holiest places on earth. Being in Jerusalem, we always look for the hidden gems, to find "our own" special city. We would like to share with you some of our favorite places.

Hidden gems in Jerusalem
  1. Mishkenot Shananim: The first neighborhood established outside the walls of the old city of Jerusalem in 1860. This beautiful neighborhood is a lovely place for a late afternoon walk, strolling in the narrow alleys, and admiring the decorated houses and atmosphere.
  2. The Austrian Hospice: When we step inside the gated complex of the castle-like guesthouse, it is as if we are stepping back in time to Colonial Jerusalem. In the midst of the Muslim Quarter on the famous Via Dolorosa, enjoy coffee and apple strudel in the beautiful garden, and climb to the rooftop for an amazing lookout over the Old City of Jerusalem.
  3.  American Colony Hotel: Step back into 19th century Jerusalem and enjoy High Tea at the American Colony Hotel in eastern Jerusalem. Served here daily from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m., there are a variety of sandwiches, scones with strawberry jam, fresh strawberries, and English cake. So British!
  4. Marzipan Coffee place: Sample the famous Marzipan rugalach, but instead of their location in the busy Machane Yehuda Market, we prefer the cozy and quiet cafe in the Emek Refaim neighborhood on Rachel Imenu St., where the atmosphere is extremely friendly and the owner, Roni, is always waiting with a big smile.
  5. Beit Jimal Catholic monastery in the Judean Foothills near Beit Shemesh (25 minutes drive from Jerusalem), this small beautiful church is surrounded by rolling fields and breathtaking views, and there are amazing ceramic dishes sold in the monastery’s small shop. This is the place for us to get nice gifts.
